Principal's Message

Dr. Smith-Ough

Dear Curie Families,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Dr. Cynthia Smith-Ough (“Dr. O”), and I am excited to be the next principal of Curie School. I live here in San Diego with my husband, Charlie, and three children, Stephanie, Nicole and Max. I am delighted to be a part of the Curie School community. Over the last couple of weeks, I have been spending a lot of time at Curie getting to know the building, the school’s community and bringing myself up to date on Curie’s school goals and strategic plan, as well as starting to hear about what makes Curie such a unique and special place. Curie is a place where strong connections are made between the home and school and where all staff members are committed to developing the whole child. I value both of these characteristics, and I am excited to help continue moving Curie along the path of excellence. I feel extremely honored to be at Curie, and I am really eager to get to know all of you and your children.

Professionally, I have experience as a classroom teacher, staff developer, and academic coach. Additionally, I have nine years’ experience serving as a principal of two elementary schools. During my time as an educator and administrator, I spent a great deal of my time working on professional development committees, supporting new curriculum initiatives and student growth opportunities. Throughout my years in education, I have continued to stay current on best practices for kids and successful schools.

In my eyes, one of the most important aspects of my work as Curie’s principal is building solid relationships with students, families and teachers. It will be very important to me to be in the hallways, classrooms and on the playground getting to know your children. In my past experience, I have found that kids really appreciate a person who genuinely invests in them and who is fair in decision making. These two things are extremely important to me.

In addition to building strong relationships with all of you, it will be particularly important to me to ensure that your child and you feel safe at school. If you ever have a concern about something or a question about a specific situation or procedure, please do not hesitate to call or email me. Communication is paramount in a school. For this reason, I will always encourage you to contact your child’s teacher or me with questions.

I feel very fortunate to be serving as your principal.  Curie is a school that has many things to be proud of. I look forward to a great school year of learning and fun.

I thank you in advance for welcoming me as a part of this great community!
